Owning a life (preview)

Here is some (edited) content from an email I sent, to my daughter Allison, today:

In a discussion with my boss yesterday I mentioned that I have been writing the same book about my life over and over for the last twenty years.  He asked what was the main message.  I answered “Owning a life”.  The ultimate key to happiness is owning your life.  That includes owning your need for help from others and giving the offer of that help its due.  We all need help from others at every moment in our life.

….

In all areas of your life, step up and take ownership.  Ask God for help in this because no human being can help you do this.  Assuming that ownership will result in true self-assurance and confidence, which equals satisfaction and happiness.  Do not let anyone rob you of this opportunity no matter their “good intentions”.  Your life and the choices you make in it are 100% your responsibility.

Here is a prayer I say routinely … “God, take my will and my life, guide me in my recovery.”  This prayer is short but has a deep and rich history with me, and many others.  It takes very little time to say but can greatly impact my outlook and attitude when I am challenged by life.

OK … I am shutting up now.  I love you so much baby girl!

I want to be like …

Ronald Wilson Reagan (click to watch)

I remember listening to him on the television and believing.  While he did not speak down to the audience he was certainly plain spoken.  Or at least it seems to me that way now.

When will we have another president that will speak to world leaders as plainly and forthrightly as did Reagan?  President Obama has the stage and the opportunity to speak to the leadership and the people in the middle east.  Will he match the verve and heart to match Ronald Reagan?  Sadly, I think not.

When will we have another president that inspires and leads the American populace?  His flaws notwithstanding, Bill Clinton had this.  George W. Bush demonstrated capacity for this while leading our nation during the 911 crisis.  Who shows the potential today?  For me, it is Marco Rubio.  I fully expect this man to step up to leadership in his time.

Rainy Days

Here in southwest Texas is a steady rain to start spring break week.  The Squid is home from college and disappointed we are not fishing.  Squid by the way is not bait but rather my daughter.  (She is “Squid” as a result of the countless hours we watched a cartoon together that referred to new/novice types as squids.)  Ever since she was introduced to fresh ceviche hanging out on the beach she has pushed me to take her fishing for trout at here every opportunity.  Being the somewhat unskilled salt water fisherman, we have yet to prepare our own ceviche.

Last night Squid found an excellent parking space nearby Reliant Stadium where she attended the rodeo with friends.  When her friends discovered where she had parked they warned her she would be towed and indeed she was!  Sad smile  So Dad (that would be me) gets a call just as I am preparing to lay me down to sleep from a crying Squid.  Two hundred and thirty bucks and a few hours later, I did lay me down to sleep.  Let’s see …  do I make her pay for this?  Hmmm … the only income she has is her college stipend from me.  Why do Dads spoil daughters?  (Obvious rhetorical question.)

Rainy Saturdays are my opportunity further my yet  basic skills in HTML markup and Visual Basic programming.  Today I will try adding a “sandbox” page to this blog as a target for some markup.

2012_01_20 Observation Report

2012_01_20 Friday p.m.

Glen and I arrived at deer lease at 3:00. Glen is on Ho Chi Min, I’m on Cindy”s stand.

Neither of us saw any deer but but I took head shot at a medium size hog across creek just before dark.  This was a 275 yd. shot with not much chance of success.  I am not that good of a shot!

2012_01_21 Saturday a.m.

I am on Shag and  Glen is on playhouse.

2012_01_21 Saturday p.m.

I am on Cheyenne’s and Glen is on Cadyn’s Corner.  Glen shot a spike.

2011 Hunting Update

We are well on track to shooting our does but woefully behind on bucks.  The acorn crop seems to be a bumper year, despite the Texas drought, and seems to have kept the deer snuggled deep in the woods.  We did not see a lot of rut activiity this year and expect the bulk of it happened during the week when few folks were hunting.

Duck hunting has been great for my bird hunting buddies.

Dry Bean October 29, 2011

George and I hunting this weekend.

got this text from George at 9:30:

“I have a doe that has “sausage” branded on her ass. You want I should harvest her?”

I replied in the affirmative.

I’m on Elise”s stand and have only seen one small doe at 8:45. Did get snorted early this morning at daybreak.

Pat shot this fine buck on Thursday:

Headed to Colorado!

My brother and his fiance’ have invited my wife and me to witness their exchange of wedding vows.  This will happen in an upper mountain meadow in northern central Colorado just below the border with Wyoming.  Adding to the excitement is this will happen on land I hunted and explored with my brother for four years.

What an honor this invite is and what fun we will have!
